I started playing with drones about 3 years ago, after receiving a 20 euro helicopter for christmas present. Firstly assembling simple quadcopters using basic flight controller like KK2.0, and then moving to more complex ones, using APM with GPS and realtime telemetry. Assembling a drone is very interesting and you learn a lot in terms of dimensioning and tuning, but I wanted to understand the full picture, so I started looking at the Arducopter code base. At that time I found it very difficult due to the tool chain set up and the complexity of the project so I decided to start from scratch. Since I wanted to learn python I was wondering if there was any development board on the market using micropython and I ended up with choosing the pyboard. That was the beginning of the airPy project.
